Do I Need Special Insurance to Drive My RV to Mexico From Texas?

If you plan to embark on a journey south of the border, your recreational vehicle (RV) can make for a convenient and comfortable travel. However, while traveling Mexican roads, you may need to account for many of the same risks and exposures as you would domestically. Furthermore, insurance regulations and requirements may change once you’ve crossed the border.

What to Know About Auto Insurance in Mexico flag of Mexico

First, you should be aware that your domestic auto insurance should not be relied on for coverage once you’re abroad. If you plan to operate your RV, or any automobile, on public Mexican roads, you are legally obligated to carry Mexican auto coverage. While intended specifically for vehicles in Mexico, these policies may include many familiar components as their U.S. counterparts, such as the following:

  • Third-party liability coverage—This is legally required and may consist of the following financial protections:
    • Bodily injury liability coverage for other parties’ injuries should you be at fault for an accident
    • Property damage liability coverage for property damage you cause
  • Physical damage coverage—This can financially protect the physical body of your RV from crashes, as well as noncollision incidents, such as theft, vandalism and fires.
  • Medical payments coverage—This may help you and your passengers access health care while abroad should you be injured in an accident.
  • Medical evacuation coverage—This part of your policy may cover the cost of transporting you from remote areas to better-equipped medical facilities, or even back to the United States.
